“I really enjoyed ESREF in Aalborg and was very pleased with all the arrangements and the overall logistical organization of the conference at this beautiful location. I should say it was a roaring success with a record number of submissions, exhibitors and a beautifully planned out program with adequate opportunities for technical interactions and social networking. I hope to attend ESREF more consistently in the years to come and look forward to more learning experiences there with different cultural connections to different parts of Europe!”

Nagarajan Raghavan (IPFA Co-Chair, SUTD, Singapore)

“I had a great time at ESREF 2018. I learned a lot from the technical talks especially on the GaN reliability. I got chance to network with many other researchers/engineers from academia and industries. The social event at Voergaard Castle was also very well organized, served with a great food and very entertaining shows. Overall, I can say ESREF 2018 was a great success. Congratulations to all the organizers! Looking forward to attend ESREF 2019”

Wardhana A. Sasangka (IPFA 2019 Technical Program Co-Chair/SMART, Singapore)

ECPE Workshop: Frontiers in Reliability Engineering: Railway Traction, Renewables, Industry

08:40-10:20 Session W4, Thursday

Organizers

Eckhard Wolfgang, ECPE e. V. (Germany)

Eckhard Wolfgang studied Technical Physics at the TU Vienna, Austria. After he received his PhD in 1970 he joined Siemens Research Labs at Munich where he remained until retirement in 2006. From 1989 on he was in charge of the power electronics department: HVDC thyristors, high voltage IGBTs, module packaging and reliability were main topics. Since retirement, he is a consultant for ECPE, the Center for European Power Electronics. He is organizing Tutorials, Workshops, and Conferences like ESREF and CIPS.

Huai Wang, Aalborg University (Denmark)

Huai Wang is currently an Associate Professor and a Research Thrust leader with the Center of Reliable Power Electronics (CORPE), Aalborg University, Denmark. His research addresses the fundamental challenges in modelling and validation of power electronic component failure mechanisms, and application issues in system-level predictability, circuit architecture, and robustness design. Dr. Wang received his PhD degree from the City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, in 2012. He was a Visiting Scientist with the ETH Zurich, Switzerland, from Aug. to Sep. 2014, and with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, from Sep. to Nov. 2013. He was with the ABB Corporate Research Center, Switzerland, in 2009. He is the Chair of IEEE PELS/IAS/IE Chapter in Denmark.

Abstract

The basic idea of this Workshop is to get an impression on the challenges the different branches have to face. The situation of automotive electronics will be discussed in other Workshops at this conference.

Schedule/Content

The Workshop will focus on discussions stimulated by statements of experts and attendees. Here are the topics that will be covered in this Workshop.

  • Introduction: Eckhard Wolfgang, ECPE e.V.
  • Mission Profile and Lifetime: Huai Wang, Aalborg University
  • Railway traction and Power Modules: Michael Piton, Alstom
  • Renewables: Peter de Place Rimmen, Danfoss
  • Industry: Lars Rimestad, Grundfos

Who should attend?

All attendees who want to know how different industries handle reliability engineering are welcome. The Robustness Validation process which relies on the knowledge of mission profiles, failure mechanism and accelerated tests will be in the middle of discussions.
